Kyoto certainly trumps Tokyo as a place to visit although like Jim we found the many parks provide an opportunity to sit and watch the world go round.
Absolutely agree that travelling at the weekend is to be avoided if at all possible.

I would add, tourists should sometimes spend a “relax day” to unwind from the stress of Japan travel. Plenty of parks to visit for free. Grab a bento or onigiri plus an adult beverage and just kick back and enjoy the vibes. Weather permitting
Yes, some version of an unscheduled day is often the very best day of the trip!
